Haiti Methodists celebrate 200th anniversary

Haiti has been hosting special events to highlight the Church's history and contribution to the country, the poorest nation in the America's.

Founded by missionaries from England and Ireland in 1817, it is the oldest Protestant church in the Caribbean country, and has survived both political repression and natural disasters.

An estimated 1,000 people attended the Methodist Church at Bird College in the capital Port-au-Prince for a commemorative service on Sunday.

Bishop Gesner Paul also used his speech at the event to demand government reform and an end to corruption.

Methodist Church representatives from Britain, Ireland, the United States and Canada have joined celebratory events, which include youth and children's activities.

A network of 105 elementary schools, 15 secondary schools, a teaching training school and several technical schools are operated by the Methodist Church of Haiti.
