An 19-year-old Christian rapper has made history at the 30th anniversary of the MOBO Awards, signalling what many are calling a breakthrough moment for gospel music in the UK.
DC3, an independent artist from Northampton, became the first act to win both Best Gospel Act and Best Newcomer in the same year at the awards ceremony, held at Manchester’s Co-op Live arena on Thursday.
The dual win is particularly significant, with Best Gospel Act decided by industry figures and Best Newcomer voted for by the public, pointing to both critical recognition and strong grassroots support.
The MOBO Awards have long been seen as a reflection of Black music’s cultural influence in the UK, celebrating genres from grime to Afrobeats. But it's been suggested DC3’s success suggests gospel music is increasingly finding a place within that mainstream space.
His rise comes amid growing conversations about the influence of faith-based music within wider culture, particularly among younger audiences. With lyrics rooted in Christian faith but delivered through contemporary rap, DC3 represents a new generation of artists blending spirituality with modern sound.
The moment has also been welcomed by those who have supported gospel music over many years. Premier Gospel, which has partnered with the MOBO Awards’ Gospel category for more than a decade, has played a key role in platforming the genre.
Muyiwa Olarewaju OBE, station director and head of music at Premier Gospel, said the win reflects a wider cultural shift.
“This is more than a win for one artist this is a cultural shift. To see a gospel artist not only recognised but embraced by the public in this way speaks volumes. It tells us that faith, authenticity and excellence are not barriers to mainstream success they are catalysts for it. We’ve believed in this moment for over a decade, and tonight, the world has caught up.”
While the night featured major names including Olivia Dean, Central Cee and international figures such as Pharrell Williams, Olarewaju said it's s DC3’s breakthrough that many believe will define this year’s awards.
