Glamrock singer and Christian convert Alvin Stardust dead

According to reports, he was recently been diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer and died at home with his wife and family around him.

Stardust famously converted to Christianity while on a 40-minute train journey.

According to his former partner, actress Liza Goddard, he converted during a conversation with a group of people in his carriage.

A cleaner at Waterloo found the group on their knees praying.

Stardust came home and reportedly said "I've found God."

Born Bernard Jewry in the East End of London in 1942, his hits included "My Coo Ca Choo", "Jealous Mind" and "I Feel Like Buddy Holly".

He also appeared on stage in such musicals as Godspell, The Phantom of the Opera and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, in which he played fearsome character The Childcatcher.

Gerald Coates, founder of the Pioneer network of Churches claims he was one of the first people who prayed with the singer, speaking to Premier, he said: "Alvin Stardust became a Christian 25-years-ago. Cliff Richard was a part of my church then, I was a pastor to Cliff for many years and one evening he knew I was speaking so he brought Alvin along."

The former glam rock star had been due to release his first studio album in 30 years this autumn.
