Former Archbishop of Canterbury calls for government to insulate more homes and be more 'edgy' about climate change

by Sophie Drew

Former Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams is urging the government to take more action to tackle climate change internationally – saying he wishes they would take a “more edgy role”.

He also called for the government to insulate more homes, and said he has “sympathy” with the tactics used by activists like Just Stop Oil.

Speaking to PA News Agency, he said: “I would like to see them doing more.

“I would like to see them pushing ahead a bit further with insulation schemes for example and also playing, I think, a slightly more edgy role internationally.”

It’s not the first time he has spoken out on the importance of prioritising climate change. In 2019, during an interview with BBC Radio 4, he claimed the worsening environmental issues were “everybody’s problem” but they were “just too uncomfortable to face”.

Dr Williams will be attending a inter-faith climate repentance ceremony in London on Sunday.

The conference, held at Parliament Hill Viewpoint in London, will see faith leaders seek forgiveness for the sins committed against the planet, spurring climate change.

Leaders will gather at the bottom of the hill and walk to the viewpoint, mimicking the ascent to Mt Sinai.

The event has been organised by the Elijah Interfaith Institute and its Board of World Religious Leaders.
