Facebook rejects calls for crucifix reaction emoji

by Eno Adeogun

It comes just weeks after the social network unveiled a rainbow flag reaction emoji, to mark LGBT Pride month on 9 June and allow its users to celebrate the LBGT community.

Hikmat Hanna, a Christian Facebook user argued for the company to add the cross emoji to it's platform since it had no problem adding the LGBT flag.

His comments got the attention of Joshua Feuerstein, an Arizona-based evangelist and popular internet personality, who created a protest poster, calling for Facebook to create the cross reaction button.

More than 28,000 people have reacted to the post which has attracted more than 20,000 likes.

Some users wrote supportive comments on the post, saying: "Facebook's far left agenda and hatred for Christians will not be forgotten. This latest left-driven polarisation will just push people like me to become more vocal and damning of their hypocrisy."

However, more than 3,000 people reacted to the campaign with the rainbow flag emoji.

Some commenters pointed out that the introduction of the crucifix emoji would mean Facebook would be compelled to introduce symbols for other faiths.

Another comment said: "OK so by that logic there should be one for Muslims, Jews, Buddhists and all other religions. Stop feeling persecuted, because it's not like they have reactions for all faiths except Christianity."

In an email to the Huffington Post, a Facebook spokesperson said: "This reaction is not actually available on Facebook, and is not something we're working on."
