The former drummer of a Christian rock band has died in a plane crash in San Diego.

The collision occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning, around 3.47am, when a small private plane crashed into the Murphy Canyon neighbourhood, setting cars and homes alight and injuring people on the ground.

In total, there were six people onboard the plane, all of whom are presumed dead.

Also killed was music agent Dave Shapiro, 42, co-founder of Sound Talent Group, who represented rock bands including Sum 41, Story of the Year and Pierce the Veil.

According to CNN, eight people on the ground in the military housing community where the plane crashed were injured, though none are reported to have life-threatening injuries at this stage.

Daniel Williams, 39, was the former drummer for metal band The Devil Wears Prada. The band was part of the Christian metalcore movement, which included groups such as Underoath, As I Lay Dying, August Burns Red and Demon Hunter. Christian metalcore is a genre that combines the intensity of metal with Christian themes and messages.

Shapiro, who held a pilot’s licence, is not confirmed to have been flying the plane at the time of the crash. He was considered a ground-breaking music executive, championing subcultures and independent labels. He co-founded the National Independent Talent Organization and was included in Billboard’s 2012 “30 Under 30” list, seen as a rising star in the entertainment industry.
