EasyJet mea culpa over inflight magazine article promoting Northern Ireland Orange parades attendance

by Desmond Busteed

"Hundreds of colourful parades take place across Northern Ireland on 12 July bank holiday to commemorate the 1690 Battle of the Boyne," read the blurb in the inflight easyJet Traveller magazine.

"They're great to watch, just check ahead for travel disruptions and advice," added the guide.

In July a number of police officers were injured after loyalists rioted in Belfast when a contentious Orange Order parade was halted.

Each year the Orange lodges and accompanying bands commemorate the victory of the Protestant King William III at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690.

The disturbances broke out at a volatile community interface in the north of the city as police prevented Orangemen and loyalist bands marching from the unionist Woodvale area toward the nationalist, mainly Catholic, Ardoyne.

However, violence followed a day of largely peaceful 12th of July holiday loyal order parades across Northern Ireland, the highlight of the loyalist marching season.

Last year there was no rioting but, in 2013 when restrictions were first imposed on the Orange parade, mass violence erupted in the unionist Woodvale area.

Sammy McNally, a Northern Irish blogger, complained to the airline over the article, asking whether it would encourage tourists heading to Serbia to visit festivals which might "exacerbate ethnic tensions".

Reacting to a complaint from McNally, easyJet said: "We rely on an external network of writers, based in each of our destinations, to provide the recommendations for our destination guides that appear within easyJet Traveller.

"These writers are always locally based and are respected journalists in their community and it's their expertise and on-the-ground knowledge that makes the content of our guides so useful.

"In this instance the author of our Belfast guide felt the event's inclusion was of cultural interest to our readers, however, we fully understand the sensitivities around the event and apologise for it not being spotted at our normally rigorous editorial sign off," added the easyJet statement.

The airline also confirmed it "will not be including such recommendations in future."
