The site, which welcomes more than 750,000 visitors each year, topped an online poll by HolidayLettings, scooping 36 per cent of the votes.

Very Rev Andrew Tremlett, Dean of Durham, said: "We are delighted to hear that Durham Cathedral has received yet another national award."

The accolade comes weeks after Durham Cathedral was crowned BBC Countryfile Magazine's Heritage Site of the Year and Britain's Favourite Cathedral in the LandLove Magazine Awards.

Dean Tremlett continued: "All three accolades have been awarded to Durham Cathedral following a public vote, reflecting the enduring charm and popularity of Durham Cathedral."

Nearly 14,000 votes were cast for Durham Cathedral.

Lincoln Cathedral and Lichfield Cathedral came in second and third place, respectively.

Saskia Welman, senior communications manager at TripAdvisor, which owns HolidayLettings, said: "The cathedrals competition has been our most popular and successful to date, with thousands of votes cast over the last few weeks.

"Durham Cathedral was a front runner from the start and we are delighted that it has won this accolade."

Part of the Durham UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Romanesque landmark has been a place of worship for nearly a millennium.

Saskia Welman from Trip Advisor added: "Many people commented on the article stating how wonderful the Cathedral is and it's fantastic to see the local community support one of their treasures so vigorously.

"Congratulations to Durham!"
