A man in Spain who drove his car through a church has said he did so because he was possessed by the devil and needed to get close to the altar to be safe from his possession.

According to the Mail Online, the incident happened in the early hours of Wednesday morning at San Juan Evangelista in Sonseca.

Local police said a woman approached the man in the Jeep at the church door thinking he had an accident, but he shouted at her, scaring her away.

Then the driver continued ramming his car into the building until he got in and drove through the church, smashing the pews and ending up at the altar.

Police said they found the man "visibly disturbed" at the altar. He told the Civil Guard that the altar was the only place he could be safe.

He was taken to hospital with several injuries. No one else was injured.

It's been reported in Spanish media that the man, who owns a shop which sells cannabis-related products near the church, could have suffered from a psychotic outbreak.
