Ethan Fisher, the senior pastor of Gateway Church Houston and son-in-law of the church's founder Robert Morris, announced on Sunday 18th August that the church will be rebranded as Newlands Church. This decision follows recent allegations of child sexual abuse against Morris.
In a recorded message to his congregation, Fisher, who is married to Morris' daughter Elaine, explained that the name change is a response to what he perceives as a divine directive. "I believe God is leading us into a new season.
"This rebranding symbolises our obedience and commitment to the path God has set for us. Just as God changed names in Scripture to signify a new beginning, we are embracing this new chapter with hope and faith." he said, according to The Christian Post.
The rebranding comes amid serious allegations against Morris.
Cindy Clemishire, 54, accused Morris of sexually abusing her starting when she was just twelve years old, with the abuse continuing for over four years. Morris resigned from Gateway Church on 18th June following these revelations.
Morris has admitted to engaging in "inappropriate sexual behavior with a young lady" during his early years as a pastor but did not disclose her age. The church's elders initially believed Morris had been candid about his past but later acknowledged that they were unaware of the full extent of the allegations.
Fisher expressed his shock and grief over the allegations, stating that he and his wife were blindsided by the details. "We are processing this as a family," Fisher said. "Elaine and I are deeply affected, and we are navigating this difficult time alongside our congregation."
The transition to Newlands Church will be gradual, with signage and branding changes occurring over the next several months. Fisher emphasised that the church’s mission remains unchanged: to follow God's guidance and serve the community faithfully.
"The name change represents more than just a new sign; it's about a renewed commitment to our mission and values" Fisher said. "We look forward to what God has in store for us in this new chapter."
