Disney debuts first Christian character in 20 years as trans storyline axed

by Heather Preston

Disney has introduced its first openly Christian character in nearly two decades for the upcoming Pixar animated series Win or Lose.

This marks the first time since the 2007 film Bridge to Terabithia that a Disney film or series has prominently featured a Christian character.

The series, set to premiere on Disney+, is Pixar’s first original show and takes place in the world of 'Inside Out'. It follows the journey of a school softball team as they prepare for their championship game.

Laurie, the daughter of the team’s coach, is introduced in the first episode as an athlete who struggles with self-doubt and insecurity. However, she leans on her Christian faith to navigate these challenges.

In one scene, she is shown praying to her "Heavenly Father" for guidance, and her room features angelic imagery. The character appears to depict Christianity in a rare, positive light within Disney media.

The introduction of Laurie comes shortly after Disney reportedly removed a transgender storyline from the series.

Some speculate that the decision to highlight a Christian character is a strategic move to broaden the company’s appeal, particularly following a decline in Disney’s recent popularity.

Others note that this shift coincides with the recent election of Donald Trump as U.S. president, which coincides with a shift toward more conservative values.
