Diocese of Blackburn plans for 50 new congregations in 10 years

The first of the 50 will open its doors on Friday at St Nicholas School in Accrington.

It is hoped over the ten years traditional churches will be formed as well as new worshipping communities.

Speaking on Premier's News Hour, Bishop of Burnley Rt Revd Philip North outlined his expectations.

He said: "I think we'll have a huge variety. Some will be where church life has failed and we'll bring it round and renew it by bringing in the right team.

"Some will be led by lay people. Some will be small and informal, some will be much more traditional."

The formation of the new congregations will come ahead of the celebrations for the diocese's 100th anniversary which takes place in 2026.
