A fundraising campaign has started for a five-year revamp, which will also include replacing the historic landmark's 1930s concrete floor.
Chapter Steward of Derby Cathedral, Rachel Morris, said: "Visitors and worshippers want more comfortable seating, they want to explore more of the history of the building, and they want a more varied range of events in the Cathedral."
Leaders at Derby Cathedral say the 'Revealing the Derby Story' project, which will include an application for a £1.6 million Heritage Lottery Fund grant, will enable them to host larger events.

Acting Dean of Derby Rev Dr Sue Jones said: "We want to enable the Cathedral to offer a gathering place for events and services large and small."
During the floor replacement, archaeologists were invited to investigate the medieval foundations of the Cathedral, which was rebuilt in 1723.
The project will also offer students work experience opportunities in various fields, including engineering, music, event managements and history.
Prof Kathryn Mitchell, the University of Derby's Vice-Chancellor, said: "We see this as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Derby students to be involved in a step-changing project."
