Crowds gather at Nicaragua cathedral despite crackdown on churches

by Sophie Drew

Despite a crackdown on churches in Nicaragua, the Roman Catholic Cardinal Leopoldo Brenes has attended an event of the Virgin of Fatima.

The event was supposed to end with a pilgrimage and a procession, but this was banned by police forces for ‘security reasons.’

The government has been exercising increased control over churches in the country, closing seven religious radio stations and placing a Catholic priest under house arrest.

A number of Catholic bishops in the country have condemned the action.

Despite having parts of the celebration banned, crowds still gathered in the atrium of the Magagua Metropolitan Cathedral.
