Colombian bishops back u-turn on pro-homosexuality lessons

The proposals, which were contained in a booklet entitled 'Non-Hegemonic Sexual Orientations and Gender Identities in Schools', prompted large nationwide protests last week.

Welcoming an announcement by President Juan Manuel Santos (pictured above) that the document would not be introduced, the Colombian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) was quoted by the Catholic News Agency as saying it "received with satisfaction the announcement of the National Government and the Department of Education that they will not promote or implement gender ideology in the country."

The document was developed under an agreement between the Colombian government, Unicef, the United Nations Population Fund, and the United Nations Development Program.

A statement from the Colombian government's education department said the material "was published on the United Nations web pages in order to be discussed, without authorization from the department, as was noted in the public statement of that organization.

"That document will not be authorized."

According to the Catholic News Agency, the CCCB said demonstrations staged across the country in opposition to the proposals were "an exercise by the parents of their right to be assisted in educating their children in accordance with their convictions and values."

The Catholic leaders also discouraged discrimination on the grounds of "race, sex, sexual orientation, national or family origin, language, religion or political opinion".
