Canon Jeremy Pemberton married his long term partner in April and can now no longer work as a priest in Nottinghamshire but will continue as a hospital chaplain.
The acting bishop for Southwell and Nottingham, Rt Revd Richard Inwood, said the action had been taken because Anglican teaching must be reflected in the lives of the clergy.
It comes as the Bishop of Birmingham has told Premier he expects the Church of England to have a thorough 'conversation' about gay clergy getting married.
