The comments come after MP David Mowat said that tackling the care crisis requires people to be responsible for the well-being of their own elderly parents.
According to the Local Government Association, an extra £2.6 billion is needed by the end of the decade to support our growing elderly population.
The Pilgrims' Friends Society said that because of the demands of modern life and globalisation, families are not always able to look after their elderly relatives in the same way they were in the past.
Speaking to Premier News Hour, Louise Morse from the charity said: "Globalisation has meant families have had to move away for work and it leaves their parents somewhat isolated. This means the social contract has changed."
Morse added that the church, as the "family of God", should step in to help care for the elderly when biological families are unable to.
"Churches only need one person to be a sort of champion of this kind of exercise. Somebody who is really concerned to take stock of their older people and support their older people too so that they in turn can visit other older people. Then the church can run a program of not letting older people feel isolated. There's a great need to combat loneliness and dementia."
