According to The Times newspaper, the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) has received so many noise complaints about houses of worship, it forced some to close until they'd paid a fine.
In all, LASEPA receives thousands of grievances over noise pollution every year.
Other sources of noise include mosques, music shops, power generators and car horns.
Many of the churches fined by LASEPA hold all-night prayer vigils, which can spill out onto the streets and involve loud music and shouting in celebration.
Philio Gboghor, a Christian living near a church which could be heard from hundreds of metres away, told The Times: "Everyone needs prayer".
