Churches guilty of 'favouring the young over the old'

by Antony Bushfield

Louise Morse from Pilgrims Friend Care Homes, which are run with a Christian ethos, told Premier's News Hour some churches are not showing the respect to the elderly they deserve.

Some churches are "actually doing the kind of favouritism that the Bible tells us about," she warned.

"They are favouring the young over the old people."

She was speaking in response to a Chinese village that has started to 'name and shame' young people who do not care enough for their parents.

The elderly community in Huangfeng raised concerns their offspring were not giving them enough time and attention.

It lead to a new procedure that can end up in a young person having their name and photograph posted on a billboard.

I charge you, in the sight of God and Christ Jesus and the elect angels, to keep these instructions without partiality, and to do nothing out of favoritism.

1 Timothy 5: 21

Ms Morse said the story should make us consider how we treat the elderly in the UK.

"Let's look at what we're doing here in our own lives and in our churches", she said.

"What are we doing in our churches? How are we encouraging our younger generations to look after their older people and how are we mirroring the design that God built into the life cycle to honour older people?"

She said churches should consider appointing a group to "look out" for older people and help the elderly play a more active role in church.

Pensioners could run mentoring clubs or prayer groups for young people to come to with their requests.

"It's turning your mind to older people who have qualities that you don't have when you're young.

"They have wisdom and experience.

"God has a high view of old age."
