Church of England releases prayer ahead of EU referendum

by Aaron James

While some bishops have expressed an opinion on whether we should remain in or leave the European Union, the Church of England's prayer does not express a position but instead asks God to help all voters make a decision.

It's encouraging both churches and individuals to use the prayer as they decide how to vote.

The In campaign is urging Britain to remain in the European Union, saying it promotes security and peace by uniting countries which were previously at war, encourages economic prosperity through its free trade agreement, and passes laws which protect workers and environment.

Others are urging Britain to leave, saying a country should be able to control its immigration levels, that its own laws and politicians should be sovereign, and the £20bn a year EU membership fee could be better spent.

The Anglican Church's prayer reads: "God of truth,

"Give us grace to debate the issues in this referendum with honesty and openness.

"Give generosity to those who seek to form opinion and discernment to those who vote, that our nation may prosper and that, with all the peoples of Europe, we may work for peace and the common good.

"For the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord.

"Amen."
