The announcement comes 21 years after the consecration of the Church of England's first black bishop John Sentamu.
His appointment comes as the Church looks to increase the number of BME clergy in leadership positions.
Aside from Dr Dorgyu and Archbisop Sentamu three archdeacons and one dean make up the most senior BME clergy in the Church of England.
In 2015, just 1.9 per cent of people embarking on the process of becoming a priest in the Church of England came from a BME background.
Dr Dorgu spoke about this issue on Premier's News Hour.
He told Premier: "I believe very strongly that my appointment in this is a very big step in the right direction and will bring fresh motivation and new encouragement. It will invite more people to come on board and feel a new sense of belonging."
Dr Dorgu was raised in Nigeria but was ordained in the UK in 1995.
He previously worked as a GP and is married to Mosun, a doctor. The pair have two grown up children.
Dr Dorgu is a keen bongo player and Arsenal supporter.
He will be consecrated at Southwark Cathedral on 17 March 2017.
