Church leaders urge Christians to resist Trump, warn of ‘authoritarian’ threat

by Mitti Hicks

Some church leaders are calling on Christians to protest President Donald Trump as the United States prepares for its 250th year of American Independence.

In a campaign that has recently surfaced at the beginning of the Lenten season, dozens of Christians and Christian leaders have supported the campaign by the group, A Call To Christians.

“We are facing a cruel and oppressive government,” the campaign states. “Citizens and immigrants [are] being demonized, disappeared, and even killed. The erosion of hard-won rights and freedoms, and a calculated effort to reverse America’s growing racial and ethnic diversity– all of which are pushing us toward authoritarian and imperial rule.”

A Call to Christians warns the U.S. is on a path of endangered democracy and the rise of tyranny, along with the danger of the rising white Christian nationalism movement.

“We call on all Christians to join us in greater acts of courage to resist the injustices and anti-democratic danger sweeping across the nation,” the group added. “In moments like this, silence is not neutrality. It is an active choice to permit harm.”

As Religion Unplugged pointed out, the campaign has major endorsements, including the National Council of Churches, the Alliance of Baptists, the American Baptist, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), the Reformed Church in America, the United Church of Christ, and more.

“Faith and democracy do not die in a single moment. They erode when we trade courage for conformity, substitute the gospel for power, and fall silent in the face of wrongdoing,” the campaign continued.
