Church launches training to encourage "hwyl" worship

Stuart Robinson, who is the Wales Coordinator for School of Church music, spoke to Premier's News Hour about the scheme: "It's the joy and spirit of singing of being together in an act of worship. I've been in services where the church is packed and there's a corporate identity."

The Royal School of Church Music, hopes the new training programme will give "music-making in churches a major shot in the arm".

Mr Robinson said music was vital, but there are churches across the UK which do not have musical worship within their church services.

"To quote St. Augustine of Hippo: 'He who sings prays twice.' I think adding music to a service gives it that extra uplift."

The Archbishop of Wales, Dr Barry Morgan, said: "Music plays an enormously important part in Christian worship, particularly here in Wales where we are known for our enthusiastic hymn singing!

"We are very grateful for the help and support the RSCM offers and I am sure these courses will equip our churches with the skills they need to keep the musical tradition strong and perhaps encourage them to try something new."

The initiative will be launched in Wales at the Church's governing meeting.
