Church launches therapy service to help struggling community

by Lydia Davies

A US church has stepped up to the challenge of addressing mental health concerns in its community.

Starting 1st September, Christ United Methodist Church in Westfield, Indiana will open a counselling centre aimed at enhancing the availability of mental health services within the community.

In Hamilton County, where the church is located, the ratio of mental health providers to residents significantly trails the state average. There is one provider for every 690 residents.

The Counselling Centre initiative has drawn inspiration from the church's longstanding mission to “positively impact lives”. It will offer comprehensive counselling services, focusing on individual growth, resilience, and healing.

The centre plans to feature seven full-time therapists specialising in mental health issues as well as relationship and family counselling.

To kick-start this project, a fundraising campaign is aiming to raise $40,000 (£32,000) to fund construction costs.

The centre’s operational sustainability will be supported by therapist rental fees, ensuring its long-term contribution to community well-being.

Dr Jeremiah Gibbs, pastor at Christ United Methodist, told the Hamilton County Reporter that the project transcends merely establishing a counselling service.

“It's about fostering a more robust and supportive community,” he said.

“We’re not just launching a facility; we’re spearheading a movement towards comprehensive wellness in Westfield.”

To further fuel this initiative, a donor has pledged to match the first $10,000 (£8,000) in donations received by 26th March 2024.
