Philando Castile was shot during a traffic stop in St Paul, Minnesota, last week.

After the pair were pulled over his girlfriend live-streamed the interaction on Facebook.

Mr Castile's girlfriend said that he was shot while reaching for his ID after telling the officer he had a gun permit and was armed.

The attorney for St Anthony police officer Jeronimo Yanez, who shot Mr Castile several times, said that the officer was reacting to the presence of a gun when he fired.

Mourners filled the 3000-seat Cathedral of St Paul to pay their respects to the 32-year-old.

The white casket arrived and left on a horse-drawn carriage.

Following the service crowds lined the cathedral's stairs holding "Unite for Philando" signs as Mr Castile's casket passed.

Revd Steve Daniels Jr. of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church questioned why racial profiling still happens during the service.

He also thanked the police for their service to communities and said people need to find a way to come together.
