Church again condemns Trident

The Kirk has called on the government to scrap the weapons and not renew them.

Currently the Trident submarine system is up for renewal during the next parliament with the Conservative government saying it is committed to keeping nuclear weapons.

Speaking at the Kirk's General Assembly Revd David McLachlan urged the government to change its mind.

"Nuclear weapons have got no place in the deference of a country," he said.

"They're not a deterrent, in fact if anything they make us a target and what our armed forces need is decent money spent on them and the equipment and things that they need not obsolete nuclear weaponry which is unusable."

Meanwhile a sailor who raised safety concerns about the Trident nuclear deterrent, describing it as a "disaster waiting to happen," has been apprehended.

Able Seaman William McNeilly was stopped at Edinburgh Airport last night and is now being held by Royal Navy Police.

He went missing last week after posting an online document containing a series of allegations about the Trident submarines based at Faslane on the Clyde.
