The Outlook Trust made the comments as a poll from Age UK reveal nearly 1 in 4 elderly people aren't looking forward to Christmas, because they could be alone.
The study also revealed 1 in 5 older people was worried they wouldn't be able to leave their house over the festive season, because of the cold, wet and darkness.
Robin Rolls, Director of the Outlook Trust, told Premier: "Every year somebody comes out to say this year's going to be particularly bad for older people, because of the weather or because of older people's poverty.
"Now the situation's getting where we really need to have something about it. It's quite critical at the moment.
"As churches we've tended to resource other areas of work, so direct mission and evangelism and youth work and children's work, which in themselves are not bad things.
"As a culture we are more concerned about making sure that we've got everything right for Christmas for ourselves and our families.
"It is up to the likes of you and I to be the church in our communities and where we live, to look out for older people, to go and do something practical this Christmas.
"Clearly central government have cut away provision right across the board, and let's be very clear: the cuts that are being made by the Coalition have meant that there are more poor people in the UK now than ever before.
"Some of the fault lies at the feet of our policymakers in Downing Street.
"But also we need to be a little bit more proactive... It's up to the likes of you and I to do something positive this Christmas."
