Kris Kristofferson, Christian and singer-songwriter, passed away on Saturday 28th September at his home in Maui at the age of 88, a family spokesperson told The Week.
Kristofferson, renowned for blending intricate folk lyrics with country music, penned hits for stars like Janis Joplin and Johnny Cash.
In 1970, three of his songs reached the top of the charts, and he achieved this feat once more three years later with the biggest hit of his career, titled Why Me.
At the time, Kristofferson said that before the song’s release, he was going through a rough time. This low period drove him to attend a church service, which ultimately inspired him to write the song.
During an interview with country’s DJ Ralph Emery, Kristofferson said: “I was moved by a song I heard in church, Help me.
“I had a profound religious experience during the session. Something that had never happened to me before.
"And Why me came out of it.”
The opening lyrics to Why me point to his faith: "Tell me Lord, what did I ever do, That was worth loving you, Or the kindness you’ve shown."
Celeb Fath Finder reported that Kris Kristofferson was raised in the Christian faith and Christianity played a significant role in his early life.
In another interview with journalist Terry Mattingly, Kristofferson talked about the role faith played in his life, particularly in his later years. He expressed how his belief in God became a source of strength and solace during difficult times, including his health battles.
Though he did not always identify as a devout Christian throughout his earlier life, Kristofferson mentioned that his spiritual journey evolved, leading to moments of deeper faith.
In addition to his music, Kristofferson found success in Hollywood.
A performance opening for Linda Ronstadt in Los Angeles led to his acting career, where he won a Golden Globe for 1976's A star is born and appeared in films like Alice doesn't live here anymore, Lone star, and the Blade series.
Kristofferson's music career saw a resurgence when he joined Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and Waylon Jennings in the supergroup The Highwaymen from 1985 to 1995.
Despite facing health challenges, he continued to perform into his 80s.
