Christian police officer sued for preaching during traffic stop

by Hannah Tooley

A women that was pulled over by a police trooper for speeding was asked by trooper Brian Hamilton whether she had been 'saved'.

The police officer then invited Wendy Pyle to church.

Ms Pyle filed a law suit, saying that the questions made her 'extremely uncomfortable.'

This is the second time Brian Hamilton has been sued for preaching at a motorist during a stop.

He was previously sued in 2014, according to The Mail Online.

Wendy Pyle said she had been driving through Pendleton in January when she was pulled over, and she was handed a leaflet about Jesus.

Richard Waples, an Indianapolis civil rights attorney who is not directly affiliated with the case, told Fox 59: "When he's engaged in the official acts of his job, especially when he's a police officer, those kinds of stops are inherently coercive.

"That is not the time to be talking to people about their religion."

Ms Pyle filed a formal complaint with Indiana State Police following the stop and the department confirmed Brian Hamilton had been taken off patrol duty and moved to a desk job.

Wendy Pyle also said she later discovered that the trooper had put her name on a 'prayer list' at his local church.

Her lawsuit was settled and Mr Hamilton was told not to ask about people's religious beliefs or give them information on religion.

A spokesperson was unable to comment on the case.
