Christian parents urged to make the Bible part of reading time

A survey by Reading Eggs found only three in five manage to read with their child before they go to bed each night, despite more than half acknowledging their offspring loves bedtime stories.

Encouraging fathers and mothers to introduce the Bible to reading time, Christian primary school teacher and mum, Bethan Mentore, told Premier's News Hour: "I think the Bible is full of brilliant stories for children.

"We think of Joshua, the story of Joseph, the parables of Jesus, and Ruth and Esther, those are stories that I want my children to be as familiar with as they are with Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

Reading Eggs found struggling to find time or being too tired can be among the barriers to parents having daily reading time with their children.

It concluded one in ten have argued with their youngsters during reading, while a quarter have skipped pages in a book, owing to sleepiness.

Bethan Mentore added: "I think that we need to open up our minds and think 'I can share the Bible with my child, as well as reading secular books with them too'".

According to Reading Eggs, nearly 85 per cent of parents have agreed that parental responsibility includes home reinforcement of subjects learned in school.
