On 16th April 2024, the case of Layan Nasir, a 23-year-old Christian Palestinian woman from Birzeit in the West Bank, came to light after she was forcibly taken by Israeli forces from her family's home without any formal charges.
In a recent development, Rev Dr Munther Isaac from Bethlehem's Christmas Evangelical Lutheran Church shared further details to his social media, revealing: "Today we learned that an Israeli military court has placed Palestinian Christian young woman Layan Nasir, who was arrested last week, in administrative detention for four months (renewable). No charges have been presented."
He described Nasir as one of many Palestinians detained without charges and labeled this practice as part of "the Israeli apartheid system that oppresses Palestinians."
Dr Isaac mentioned his conversation with Nasir's family: "I have spoken to Layan' family this morning to console them." He urged people to "Please pray for Layan and Layan's family. Please pray for justice. Please pray and advocate for the release of the thousands of Palestinian political prisoners / 'hostages!'"
Adding his voice to the outcry, Richard Sewell relayed via X that Nasir's lawyer had confirmed her detention status: "'News just in: Layan Nasir's lawyer informed us that she will be held in Administrative Detention for four months. No charges have been presented." Sewell called attention to a Guardian article providing background information on Nasir's case and encouraged people to sign a petition advocating for her release. He described the situation as "outrageous and intolerable."
Layan Nasir's lawyer informed Independent Catholic News that Nasir will be held in Administrative Detention for four months. No charges have been presented.
