Christian MP "shocked" by rising levels of alcohol violence

by Aaron James

Fiona Bruce chairs the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Alcohol Harm, which released a report today saying 4 in 5 police officers have been assaulted by drunks, and 1 in 5 have been assaulted by drunks six times or more.

More than half of police officers also say most of their case work involves alcohol-fuelled crimes, while in hospitals 7 in 10 attendances on the weekend is related to alcohol abuse.

The MP's report also found harrowing stories of abuse, including a hospital consultant who was kicked in the head by a drunk and medics who've had televisions thrown at them.

It also found alcohol-related fires cost almost five times as much as other fires, and are more likely to involve fatalities.

Bruce praised voluntary groups such as Christian charity Street Pastors, who regularly work with people who've consumed large amounts of alcohol at night.

MPs are recommending the government:

Lowers the drink-drive limit, which they say is one of the highest in Europe

Introduces a minimum pricing on alcohol. The price of a cinema ticket can buy the equivalent of 53 shots of vodka

Starts a cross-departmental national strategy on alcohol consumption

Speaking to Premier, Fiona Bruce said: "None of us are against enjoying a drink.

"We have to learn how to enjoy drink responsibly. Ten million people are drinking at levels which are at risk of harming their health. They say that it's the leading cause of death amongst 15-49-year-olds."

"It's avoidable if people drunk just a bit less."
