Christian money expert: Explore your pension options

Speaking as the government announced a new independent review into the state pension age, John French from the Association of Christian Financial Advisors told Premier it is "very much possible" some people could have to wait until past their mid-70s to receive a payment.

Speaking on Premier's News Hour, John French said: "It's a very expensive system, particularly with people living much longer.

"I'm not sure they there many other options the government has, other than to raise taxes ..or make cuts elsewhere, both of which would be unpopular, I think.

John French added: "There's auto-enrolment in place now where people are automatically put into pensions with their company unless they choose to opt-out.

"Everyone's always got the option of paying into a personal pension plan themselves. I think it's incredibly important to do that, ever so more with the state pension age increasing."

Pensions Minister Baroness Altmann has said former-Confederation of British Industry director general John Cridland will lead the independent review.

The Government said Mr Cirdland will "help ensure that the state pension remains sustainable for generations to come" by considering changes societal changes such as a shift in life expectancy.

It added that the review will not cover the existing timetable for the state pension timetable (which runs until April 2028) and Mr Cridland's review will report back by May 2017.

Financial services firm Hargreaves Lansdown has suggested those entering the workforce today could need to wait until their mid-70s to get a pay-out.

Tom McPhail, head of retirement policy at Hargreaves Lansdown, said: "We fully expect state pension ages to go up faster than currently planned, and those joining the workforce today are likely to find themselves waiting until their mid-70s to get a pay-out from the state system.

"This is simply a function of the big jumps we continue to see in life expectancy, which the state pension can't hope to support without costs spiralling out of control.

"Whatever decisions they make, the Government needs to make sure they communicate them very, very clearly so individuals can plan their retirement savings with some certainty about what they will get from the state, and when they will get it."

Owen Smith, shadow work and pensions secretary, said: "People are right to worry that the terms of this review may suggest that the Tory Government is set to speed up rises in the state pension age, throwing into chaos the retirement plans of millions of British workers."

Meanwhile, new research by the Royal London insurers has found the average earner setting up a pension where they are 22 and making the minimum statutory contributions would need to work until they are 77 to get a so-called "gold standard" pot enjoyed by many of their parents' generation.

Royal London also found workers in some parts of the UK typically face working more than five years longer than those in other areas to maintain their current standard of living when they retire.
