Bombing in the country's civil war has also destroyed hospitals, churches and schools in the region. Embargoes and destroyed transport links are making the rebuilding effort more difficult.
More than two million eastern Ukrainians have been made homeless because of the conflict which started in 2013, and many have no home to go back to this festive period.
Mission Without Borders has recently sent 40 tonnes of emergency food, clothing, furniture and roofing materials to the eastern areas of Slaviansk and Severodonets, partnering with local churches to do so.
Its National Manager in Ukraine, Mykola Bohdanets, said: ""While many refugees are now returning to their homes, they are discovering that many of them are in ruins and they have nothing.
"In this respect, support from the government and NGOs like Mission Without Borders is needed now more than ever.
"It's really painful to see the impact of this conflict; so much suffering and so many destroyed houses. I pray that this ceasefire that we now enjoy remains, and becomes a lasting peace."
