Christian actor Candace Cameron Bure responds to backlash over 'traditional marriage' remark

by Sophie Drew

Candace Cameron Bure, best known for her role on Fuller House, is responding to backlash after moving to a Christmas film channel that promotes "traditional marriage".

Cameron Bure is a well-known face amongst Hallmark Channel movie fans, and has appeared on a number of films produced by the franchise.

However, the actor recently announced she is moving to the Great American Family channel - a conservative faith-based station broadcasting films with a distinct Christian message.

Hallmark has moved into more inclusive content in recent years. When asked if her new channel would follow suit, the 46-year-old told the Wall Street Journal: "I think that Great American Family will keep traditional marriage at the core."

The comments - particularly the term "traditional marriage"- has caused considerable backlash online.

LGBT+ activists have condemned the statement, alongside a number of other high profile stars.

Responding to the criticisms, Cameron Bure said: "All of you who know me, know beyond question that I have great love and affection for all people. It absolutely breaks my heart that anyone would ever think I intentionally would want to offend and hurt anyone," she began.

She explained: "I am a devoted Christian. Which means that I believe that every human being bears the image of God. Because of that, I am called to love all people, and I do. ... My heart yearns to build bridges and bring people one step closer to God, to love others well, and to simply be a reflection of God's huge love for all of us."

She claims that the article published by the Wall Street Journal did not include her full comments, in which she stated her full support for "people of all ethnicities and identities".
