Former footballer Dani Alves has spoken publicly about his time in prison during a large evangelical event in Madrid, telling thousands of attendees that his faith helped him through what he described as a period of personal hardship.

Speaking at The Change gathering held at Madrid’s Metropolitano Stadium, Alves said: “I spent 14 months in prison, but in prison Christ set me free. I lost everything, but in losing everything I found Jesus.” He added: “I don’t know what prisons you are facing, but Christ can break down those walls.”

Alves has had a sexual assault conviction overturned on appeal due to inconsistencies in the case.

His latest remarks came during an evangelical gathering that organisers say drew around 35,000 people to the Madrid stadium. The event featured hours of live music, prayer and preaching centred on personal faith, evangelism and Christian unity.

Other speakers encouraged the crowd to “return to the Father’s house”, referencing the biblical parable of the prodigal son, and called for what they described as a “Jesus revolution” focused on living out Christian belief in daily life.

Alves concluded his sermonh saying: “I’m still crazy, but now I’m crazy for God. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.” Some say, “life is short and you have to live it.” Yes, but hell is eternal and must be avoided. Madrid, Spain—you belong to Christ!”
