Chelmsford Canon resigns over same-sex prayers

by Premier Journalist

The National Director of the Church of England Evangelical Council has resigned as an Honorary Canon over Chelmsford Cathedral’s use of the ‘Prayers of Love and Faith’ blessing for same-sex couples.

Revd John Dunnett said he had “not taken the decision lightly”.

He had been in the role since 2020 after being installed by Archbishop Stephen Cottrell. The honour was awarded to him as a senior priest who had "played a significant, long-standing role in the wider life of the diocese".

Prayers of Love and Faith do not amount to a marriage service but allow same-sex couples to receive a blessing over their relationship in church.

The prayers include phrases such as: "God of all grace, friend and companion, look with favour on N and N as they journey together through life. Deepen their love... that they may continue in lifelong faithfulness and friendship to each other; through Jesus Christ our Lord. "

The Church of England describes them as a way of "celebrating in God’s presence the commitment two people have made to each other".

“It has been a privilege to have carried this honour over the last few years,” Revd Dunnett said. “However, the Dean and Chapter’s decision to use the Prayers of Love and Faith at Chelmsford Cathedral has alienated many of us who hold to the historic and biblical Anglican doctrine.”

The Canon said he had a “fundamental objection” to “endorsing something that is contrary to the teaching of the Bible", adding: "We don’t consider that a commendation from the House of Bishops in this matter has any authority if it is at odds with Scripture."

Dunnett will remain committed to the "wider life of the diocese" and will continue as a "worshipper and giver, engaged with the synods".
