In 2015 instant messaging app WhatsApp was used, a much more widely-used platform that Telegram.
WhatsApp recently celebrated one billion users around the world.
The International Business Times has reported that Facebook purchased WhatsApp and Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, said that amount of WhatsApp users had more than doubled since joining Facebook.
Users can add @pgpompei to their contacts in order to receive a religious message each day until Easter.
The organisers Quartz, are encouraging Catholics to download it, saying it's "like WhatsApp, but better."
In the first message Pope Francis thanked people for doing good.
The pontiff's message read: "When we do something good, sometimes we are tempted to seek praise and to be rewarded: that's human glory.
"But it's a false reward because it makes us focus on what others think of us."
So far Telegram has almost 6,000 users signed up - however the app was criticised last year when Islamic State used it to send messages to thousands of followers.
