Catholic bishop wants referendum 'happy outcome'

Bishop Kieran Conry has told Premier that the referendum will affect everyone in the UK and that, whatever the decision, it is vital that it provides long-term prosperity.

"I just hope for a happy outcome; happy for everybody.

"People have made the point that people south of the border don't have a vote on it, but it actually will affect them as well," he said.

Scots will be asked, 'Should Scotland be an independent country?' on September 18.

Bishop Kieran said the Catholic Church was impartial on the issue and that he did not want to express an opinion on the outcome.

The Church in Scotland is urging all Christians to take part in the ballot, which is expected to have the highest turnout of any vote in the country.
