Cleric and broadcaster Rev Calvin Robinson has had his temporary license to minister revoked by the Reformed Episcopal Church (REC) just nine days after it was granted.

The Rt Rev Ray Sutton, presiding bishop of the REC’s Diocese of Mid-America, had issued Robinson a one-year episcopal sanctuary and licence to “serve in word and sacrament” earlier this month. However, the decision drew public criticism from Archbishop Steve Wood of the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA), who questioned Rev Robinson’s suitability for ministry.

Rev Robinson went viral earlier this year after making a gesture at a pro-life conference that appeared to resemble a Nazi salute.

“I am concerned to have the Anglican Church of North America affiliated with a leader whose public comments and persona consistently fail to exhibit the love and grace of Jesus Christ,” Archbishop Steve said, also raising concerns over Rev Robinson’s past remarks and online conduct.

As a result, Bishop Ray has now revoked the licence, writing to Rev Robinson: “After much prayer and counsel from fellow bishops, who have not required me to revoke licensure, I have decided that I must withdraw it effective this day.” He thanked Rev Robinson for his “kind and obedient service” during the brief period.

The licence did not formally admit Rev Robinson or his congregation into the REC or ACNA, but granted temporary oversight.

Rev Robinson, who has previously been rejected by several Anglican bodies, posted a screenshot of the email online and wrote: “If even he cannot find a place for me, even temporarily, perhaps God is sending me a message.”
