Busiest January ever for Christian debt charity

by Tola Mbakwe

CAP's busiest times of year are November, as people try to tackle problems before Christmas arrives and in January and February, when they find new momentum to get things sorted.

Jake Hutton, head of CAP's client setup department told Premier News Hour the most common reason for someone seeking help has to do with low cash flow.

"Income levels are really low. With rising cost of living, housing, heating, and council tax, income is often not really keeping up with those levels," he said.

CAP booked in more new clients wanting debt help in January 2018 than in any month in the charity's history.

Previously, the record stood at 1,033 people in January 2014 but on 31st January 2018, the total was 1,049.

"We're going to have good days aren't we and we're going to have bad days," Hutton said. "We're certainly not immune from difficult days in our lives and our job at CAP is that we're there for people on the difficult days."

Hutton encouraged Christians to take action if they know someone struggling.

"We're not all debt counsellors are we? But at the same time we're called to look after and love our neighbour," he said.

"If we've got people alongside of us struggling with debt it's probably good to encourage them to seek help."

Meanwhile, John Kirkby, CAP's founder, has been awarded the Langton Cross for Community Service by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

The award was presented at Lambeth Palace for "service to the poor by equipping the local church to be at the forefront of social change through CAP's and his own personal endeavours".

John Kirkby started CAP in Bradford in 1996, believing that God was calling him to sacrifice his career in the financial industry and use his experience to help the poor - people crippled by debt, living in fear and without hope.

The charity now helps around 25,000 people a year in the UK.
