Building work to go ahead on vandalised rectory grounds

The rectory in Broseley, Shropshire, is believed to have been defaced on three separate occasions just before Christmas: on December 15th, overnight between December 20th-21st and Christmas Eve.

Paint and spray paint was used to write the messages: "No room at the inn-occupy", "Matthew 6.19.20" and the word "homeless", along with the contact details for the local vicar, Revd Sue Beverly.

It is believed the graffiti is linked to community concerns about the development of the land for the new Rectory, and the sale of the old Rectory.

The old rectory - which was unoccupied - required significant repairs, and the Diocese of Hereford experienced difficulties acquiring planning permission on its grounds to build the new rectory.

Bishop Alistair Magowan said: "It was with great sadness that I learned of the criminal damage done to the Rectory at Broseley in the form of Graffiti daubed not once but three times across the frontage of the Rectory."

"Cleary from the contents of the message and information sprayed on the walls this was carried out by someone with local knowledge and in a manner chosen to cause much upset.

"I stand with others in the local community and consider this to be a cruel and cowardly act.

"The Revd Sue Beverley is an excellent and caring parish priest and is regarded with the utmost respect in the community.
"Her care and diligence is second to none and she should not have been subject to this distress.

"We look to good things in this New Year. It is with pleasure that I can announce that the Diocesan Surveyor has indicated that work on the new Rectory should begin in the spring and the aim is for completion in 10 months."
