Donald Trump quoted from the Gospel of Matthew as he announced that Israel and Hamas had agreed the first phase of a deal to end the war in Gaza.
Writing on his Truth Social site the US President said:
"This means that ALL of the Hostages will be released very soon, and Israel will withdraw their Troops to an agreed upon line as the first steps toward a Strong, Durable, and Everlasting Peace. All Parties will be treated fairly!
"This is a GREAT Day for the Arab and Muslim World, Israel, all surrounding Nations, and the United States of America, and we thank the mediators from Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey, who worked with us to make this Historic and Unprecedented Event happen. BLESSED ARE THE PEACEMAKERS!'
The line is the seventh beatitude from Jesus' Sermon on the Mount and states that those who actively work to restore harmony and reconciliation will be recognised as children of God.
The deal between Israel and Hamas would see the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from parts of Gaza.
Aid into the enclave would also be allowed to resume.
