The Christian mother of Stephen Lawrence, the black 18-year-old murdered in an unprovoked racist attack in 1993 has urged eithnic minorities to use their vote o
28% percent of black Africans weren't registered to vote in the 2010 general election, compared with 7% of white British people.
"I think because they feel so disconnected from politics and so disconnected from their MPs and so they don't see what's in it for them," said Baroness Doreen Lawrence speaking to Premier's News Hour.
"One of the things that I've been trying to do is go around to say to people 'it is important for you to have a voice', because there's no point just sitting back after the election and saying 'oh well this is what's happening.
The Labour peer is spearheading a campaign aimed at getting more black and minority ethnic groups to register to vote before the deadline closes on April 20th.
"You haven't taken part in it, so you can't complain if the vote doesn't go how you want it to go, so you have to take part," added the Labour peer.
The number of Black and Minority Ethnic MPs rose from 14 to 27 in 2010; however, only 29% were canvassed by any political party, compared with 54% of white British people.
