Rt Revd Rachel Treweek says she has been sent rotten food and nasty emails from locals that accuse her of covering up the plans.
According to the BBC the bishop was planning on selling off land in a Cotswolds village for housing.
Bishop Treweek said it was "quite unusual" for a bishop to turn up to a public meeting, however she "felt it was important" for people to realise she was being "transparent and honest", according to the BBC.
The issue of church land being used for housing was addressing on Premier Christian Radio's Woman to Woman show earlier in the week.
Alison Gelder, from Housing Justice said churches need to do more to help with housing problems: "The one that always makes clergy shift uncomfortably in their seats when I suggest it is 'why don't you knock your church down and built maybe a smaller, new church and some social housing instead?'"
She told Premier that churches can help out in any way they can: "The most basic thing is homeless people knock on the door of churches asking for help and quite a lot of churches will provide people with a cup of tea and a sandwich, sometimes they can signpost them to some help."
