The person nominated to become the next Bishop of Bristol has said that "with regret" they can no longer take up the position because of "family reasons".

In a statement on its website, the Diocese of Bristol asked for prayers for the person and said it recognised that people across the diocese "may experience a range of thoughts and emotions in response to this news".

Rt Rev Neil Warwick, Bishop of Swindon will continue to serve as acting Bishop of Bristol following the retirement of Rt Rev Vivienne Faull last year. The diocese said that would "enable stability, clarity, and continued momentum in our work and ministry". 

Responding to the news, Most Rev Dame Sarah Mullally, Archbishop of Canterbury said: “I know many will be disappointed by this news and will appreciate how difficult the decision to withdraw was for the candidate.

“Please pray for them, their family and all those affected by this decision."

As well as thanking Bishop Neil for his ongoing service as acting diocesan bishop, Archbishop Sarah asked people to pray for the Crown Nominations Commission as it reconvenes to seek God’s discernment for the next Bishop of Bristol.
