Bishop apologises after priest’s child abuse conviction

by Lydia Davies

The Bishop of Portsmouth has offered a public apology following the conviction of a former Jersey priest for child abuse.

Piotr Antoni Glas was found guilty of three counts of gross indecency with a child, committed between 2004 and 2007 while serving on the island, as reported by the BBC.

In a statement, Bishop Philip Egan expressed “deep sorrow” and “profound apologies", acknowledging the lifelong impact of the abuse.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with them and their family,” he said.

Glas is due to be sentenced on 2nd June.

The bishop reaffirmed the diocese’s safeguarding efforts, saying, “There are robust safeguarding standards… in operation throughout the Catholic Church in England and Wales.”

He urged anyone needing support to contact the diocesan safeguarding team.
