Big Church Festival has been cancelled after a number of people were injured in a serious incident at the West Sussex event. 

The festival informed artists and contributors via email on Friday night that the three-day event is no longer going ahead. 

South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) said it was called to Wiston Park, Steyning, shortly after 3.30pm and confirmed at least six patients.

Ambulance crews, critical care paramedics and specialist response teams were at the scene alongside other emergency services.

Sussex Police said officers were called at around 3.38pm following “reports of a sign having fallen and injured a number of people at the site in Washington Road”.

Attendees had been instructed to leave the site on Friday evening. 

In a statement on social media on Friday evening, Big Church Festival said: "Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been directly impacted by the incident."

It added: "We are working closely with the emergency services and relevant authorities."

It also thanked the festival community for their "understanding, patience, and prayers" and acknowledged the disappointment felt by thousands of people attending the event.

Sussex Police warned of possible traffic disruption in the area and urged people to seek alternative routes where possible.

The force said it had no further information at this stage but would provide updates when available.
