Biden and Zelenskiy visit Kyiv cathedral, pay tribute to fallen Ukrainian soldiers

by Reuters Journalist

Air raid sirens blared across the Ukrainian capital Kyiv on Monday (February 20) as U.S. President Joe Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy visited St Michael's Golden-Domed Cathedral during Biden's first visit to Ukraine since the war began.

Biden, who's visit was unannounced, and Zelenskiy met the head of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine Epifaniy I in one of Ukraine's holiest orthodox sites in central Kyiv.

The two leaders honoured the fallen at a memorial wall nearby, as "Taps" played. Wreaths in the red, white and blue colours of the United States flag and the yellow and blue of the Ukrainian flag were laid at the memorial.

The leaders left the Cathedral amidst the sound of the air raid siren. There were no reports of Russian missile or air strikes.

Biden promised to stand with Ukraine as long as it takes, on a trip timed to upstage the Kremlin ahead of the one-year anniversary of Russia's invasion.
