Sales of Bibles in the United States have increased by 22 per cent in a year according to data analysis company Circana Bookscan. Figures just released show that sales exceeded 13.7million in the ten months to October 2024.
Analysts believe more people are turning to the Bible as the world grows increasingly uncertain because of conflict, the economy and the increased use of artificial intelligence. Many social media influencers are also publicly finding faith and taking their followers with them – and publishers are responding by investing in designs tailored to younger generations.
US influencer Cely Vazquez told her followers on TikTok that she had just bought her first Bible: “I’ve had Bibles that my mom gave me, but I felt I needed my own to start my own journey, that it symbolized I was starting a walk with God… I felt something was missing. It’s a combination of where we are in the world, general anxiety and the sense that meaning and comfort can be found in the Bible.”
The figures show that sales of all printed books only rose by one per cent in the same period, while more people are paying to get a physical copy of the Bible.
The Bible is the most popular book in the world with an estimated five billion copies sold worldwide every year.
